Fatal Shooting by Burnet Police Officer

BURNET— On Wednesday, March 27 at approximately 1:40 a.m., 25-year-old Brandon Michael Jacque was shot and killed by a Burnet police officer in the 300 block of S. McNeil St. in Burnet.

According to a statement given by Burnet Police Chief Paul Nelson, at 1:35 a.m. the Burnet Police Department received a dispatch in reference to a loud music call. Officers arrived on the scene and approached a red car with a man and woman inside. Jacque, the driver of the car, started backing up. Patrol Sergeant Russell Butler gave verbal commands for the driver to stop. The car came forward and Sgt. Russell retreated. In the process his left foot was run over. Sgt. Russell fired his gun, striking the driver. Afterwards, he called for EMS and started medical procedures on the suspect. Jacque was deceased in the vehicle.

Sgt. Russell was taken to Seton Highland Lakes Hospital and released before 7 a.m. with no broken bones. He has been placed on administrative leave until further notice.

The Texas Rangers are the lead investigators on the case. They are currently reviewing the officer’s body camera to determine what happened at the scene.

A GoFundMe has been created for Jacque’s funeral expenses and has brought in more than $12,000.
