Sluice gate work on the dam
Work is underway to replace the south sluice gate on the dam, this includes electrical conduit and pouring cement for the electronic gate. Llano Utility Director Josh Becker gave us information on the work being done. “The new gate will be stainless steel with an electric operator. This will allow it to be opened and closed from the water plant and prevent the danger of having staff on the dam preforming this action. The contractors have laid the conduit from the water plant to the edge of the dam. They are currently installing conduit across the dam and forming a protection head wall for the gate operator. If all goes as planned, they will pour the head wall this week along with cap for the conduit. The conduit will be installed on the downstream side of the dam in the existing L shaped cut out and filled on an angle with cement. This will not affect the water flow over the dam. After cement has been poured the gate will be closed. Once the cement is complete, the contractors will be removing the grating from behind the existing gate, installing a plug in the dam and a plate on the upriver side of the gate. They will next remove existing gate and install the new one. The operator has not completed manufacturing yet, so there will be a delay from the time the gate is installed until final project completion.”
