I'm not saying firing Rick Barnes (or forcing him out) was a terrible move—more like 50-50—but Athletic Director Steve Patterson's MO was bad and obviously transparent. Did he wake up in the middle of the night and say, "I think I've got it!"? Patterson told Barnes to get rid of one or two or however many assistants, and Barnes could probably keep his job.
