Upholding Constitutional Principles in Difficult Times

On July 24, 1849, the “Mormons” had been in the Salt Lake valley two years to the day. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were finally free from years of mobbing and persecution. That called for a great celebration. A few years earlier after mobs had driven “the Saints” from their homes in Missouri, their leader, Joseph Smith, sought redress from the judges, the governor and then from the President of the United States.
