Local children pack treats for troops
Cheese crackers, Ramen noodles…what more could a soldier in the desert want? A lot, and a lot more went into the goodie boxes sent to the Ft Hood unit serving in the Middle East from the children at First United Methodist Church. These kids are, from left, Travis Shanks, Kyra Kolek, Kenna Craig, Taryn Fry, Luke Rivers, Hagen Birck, and Liam Taylor.

The boxes are in the mail, with candies, snacks, books, toilet articles, flip-flops, and a variety of other gifts that might be welcomed by Ft Hood soldiers stationed in the Middle East. They were packed by the children at the First United Methodist Church, something they do annually as their Treats for Troops program. This year more than a dozen boxes went to members of a special operations unit in either Syria or Iraq (the mailing address is deliberately vague).
