Local Church Offers Oasis for Stranded Strangers
Pastor Lee Romero replenished chip bags as teenagers from Waco, stranded by a bus breakdown Friday, enjoyed an unexpected supper at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson City. About 30 youth and adults were stuck on the road west of town as they headed home from church camp near Leakey. A caravan of parents came to complete their trip.

The 30 Waco teenagers and adults hadn’t planned to visit Johnson City — just pass through on their way home from Alta Fria church camp at Leakey — but then their bus conked out just west of the city. That was Friday afternoon, with the temperature bumping a hundred. The driver tried to fix the engine as the kids waited on the bus without air conditioning.
