Experience Rich History with Rich Flavors

A nationally registered historic building opened its doors for business in May of 2018 in Llano, Texas. The building’s intriguing history contributed to the unique, Texas-inspired restaurant, Badu 1891.

The building was constructed as a bank in 1891 when Llano’s population was booming at 14,000. At the time, the City of Llano was deemed to be the “second Pittsburgh” for mineral mining. The minerals diminished rapidly and soon the city lost its financial fortitude. Many of the buildings in Llano were set on fire as a means of collecting insurance money. Thankfully the First National Bank of Llano did not fall victim to the fires.

Frenchman, Nicholas Joseph Badu bought the vacant bank after moving to America, turning the building into his family home. In 1980, Badu’s granddaughter sold the house and it was converted into a bed and breakfast and restaurant. The building operated as the Badu House under a handful of owners, functioning as B&Bs and/or restaurants, some of which were successful, but closed for different reasons.

“We wanted to get away from that name and go to Badu 1891 to give the building its own right,” said co-owner, Vicki Roberts. “The Badu name was significant to keep because Professor Badu was such an important figure in the growth of Llano.”

Because a substantial amount of the original hardware was missing when they bought the building, the owners searched eBay, antique stores, and hardware stores to complete the missing sets. They appreciated the unique beauty of the house’s brass floor grates so much that they ordered three custom-made replicas to use in place of the added store-bought vents.

The owners chose to preserve what they could of the building, but also added features to make it a place for people of all ages to enjoy. Owners Jeff Nash and Vicki Roberts encourage people near and far to come experience Badu 1891. Soak in its delectable dining, knowledgeable staff, and rich history that the unparalleled establishment has to offer in the heart of the Texas Hill Country.
