Lights Spectacular, Hill Country Style

Marking the 29th year, Johnson City is already preparing for their annual Lights Spectacular, Hill Country Style. Boasting millions of lights, each year downtown Johnson City becomes a beacon for Christmas light-seers, holiday cheer seekers, and everyone in between.

Pedernales Electric Cooperative begins wrapping the brilliant white lights in October, taking care to meticulously wrap the trunks and limbs of the grand oaks that adorn their property.

For nearly 30 years, they have been drawing people to the site to ooh and ah and provide a dreamy background for holiday family photo shoots.

While the PEC lights alone draw people to Johnson City, they aren’t the only spectacular thing going on around the quaint city.

A block away, the Blanco County Courthouse is adorned with ribbons of bright white lights, and numerous lighted displays make their home on the lawn surrounding the historical building.

The wonderous display begins on Friday, Nov. 23, when the town holds the “Let There Be Lights” Opening Ceremony on the Courthouse Square at 6pm.

Following the flipping of the switch to begin the nightly illumination, there will be a Fireworks Display at 6:30pm, along with a Chuckwagon Food Court, Courthouse Ornament Sales, and Tractor and Carriage Rides (Santa and the Tractor and Carriage Rides will continue each weekend until Saturday, Dec. 23).

In addition, there will be a street dance beginning after the parade, featuring the music of JR Herrera’s Band. Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive in the park after 6:45pm and will be accepting Christmas wishes until 9:30pm.

Market Days on the Courthouse Square will begin on Friday, Nov. 23 at Noon-10pm, and run Saturday, Nov. 24 10am-10pm, and Sunday, Nov. 25 10am-4pm.

On Saturday, Nov. 24, there will be an Art Walk 4pm-8pm, Parade at 6:30pm, Clickety Cloggers performing at 6:45pm.

Also, on Saturday, Nov. 24, there will be Christmas at the Boyhood Home - 1920s style, LBJ National Historical Park, 200 Elm Street, along with Lamplight tours of President LBJ’s boyhood home.

On Friday, Dec 7 and Saturday, Dec 8, and Friday, Dec 14 and Saturday, Dec 15, the First United Methodist Church will host a live nativity every 30 minutes from 6:30pm-9:30pm.

The LBJ National Historical Park will celebrate Christmas Through the Year in LBJ Country from 6pm-9pm on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the LBJ National Historical Park and the LBJ’s Boyhood Home.

Saturday, Dec 15 will also be the Art Galleries Open House from 6pm-8pm and the Holiday Bazaar at Crossroads Inn from 6pm-9pm.

On Friday, Dec 22, 5pm-7pm, there will be a PAWS Adoption Day and a Who-Ville Costume Contest at the Courthouse from 6pm-8pm.

From Christmas Eve until Sunday, Jan 6, the lights will remain lighted for all to enjoy with self-guided tours as well as Carriage Rides and Tractor-pulled Hay Rides.
