Finding Comfort in October
Multiple Fun Fall-oriented Doings
Wed, October 29, 2014 10:49 AM

For the intrepid traveler uncowed by crowds of scarecrows, eager for authentic antiques or enthusiastically enticed by the "verities of the vine" – not to mention just looking for a great time – Comfort is the place to be! Each October (traditionally a festive month), this charming old German town, known for its history, hospitality and Hill Country quaintness, welcomes one and all with multiple fun (and fanciful) fall-oriented doings guaranteed to keep attendees coming back year after year. A great addition to anyone's travel itinerary year 'round, Comfort's extra efforts this inviting month make a visit even more compelling.

The Scarecrow Invasion – Each October, Comfort's population explodes with the addition of hundreds of visiting scarecrows. Perched on porches, reclining on roofs, striking poses in storefronts, lounging on lawns, anywhere and everywhere, this homemade hoard of straw folks are temporarily adopted by the local populace bringing delight and amusement to residents and out-of-towners alike. Actually, the scarecrow infestation is the happy result of an annual competition with homeowners and local businesses vying for prizes and bragging rights (until next year's contest that is). Judging will be held in early October but the scarecrows stay on display for the entire month.

The 28th Annual Comfort Village Antiques Show – Held in Comfort's relaxing town Park on Highway 27, 50 well-stocked vendors will set up shop and be open for business on Saturday, October 18 and again on Sunday, October 19. Fabulous old (and authentic) farm tables, cupboards, architectural and gardening items, stoneware, baskets, small furnishings and many other treasures (priced to fit all budgets) will be offered to the shopping public. Decorators and collectors are especially welcome. Rain or Shine, the show goes on because everything is under cover. An admission fee (good for both days) of $5.00 will be charged. Children under 12 enter free with an adult. The Saturday show runs from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Comfort will be represented on this October's "Texas Wine Month" Trail – The entire month of October is designated "Texas Wine Month!" Texas Hill Country Wineries (a trade organization) sponsors this merry month-long driving "trail" in which 42 welcoming wineries passionately participate and two of the best are located right in Comfort: Singing Water Vineyards and Bending Branch Winery. On this festive journey, resolute travelers have the opportunity to meet, greet and taste the finest of the Hill Country's (and, especially Comfort's) locally produced, always delicious red, white and wet wonderments. Come thirsty!

Comfort is centrally located in the Texas Hill Country between San Antonio and Kerrville off Interstate 10.
