After nine great years at the Boerne Visitor Center, the Harvest Moon Celebration will be bringing its fall harvest and Halloween festivities to a larger venue at Muleshoe Farm & Ranch at 306 Highway 87 in Comfort, approximately two miles north on Highway 87 from exit 523 on IH-10.
The public is invited to enjoy this lively, old world day of fun and celebration on Halloween, October 31, from noon untilo 9 p.m. Harvest Moon Celebration is a Hill Country twist on the old world harvest festivals at the end of summer, when people gathered for bountiful food and drink, building bonfires, playing music and games, telling tales, wearing costumes, and having a last fall market before a long, dark winter.
Craft and food vendors, a children's area, live music, livestock exhibits and children's storytelling by Judith Antil start out the festival. Two times during the day Last Chance Forever offers an up close look at majestic birds of prey. In between, Karavan brings many styles of belly dance to the main stage. Storyteller Mary Grace Ketner will share Celtic and spooky tales throughout the evening.
Children are invited to compete in a costume contest (and the competition has been steep in past years!), and adults can pit themselves against pastry in a pie-eating contest. The Celtic band Ravenmoor continues the celebration through the evening with live Celtic music that makes the feet want to dance and just before sundown, trick or treating will start for the children.
Owls have an association with Halloween, fall evenings, and harvest moonlit nights and guests are invited to appreciate the creatures of the night on a dark, torch-lit nature walk called the "Trail of the Mysterious Night Flyers." Last Chance Forever will treat guests to an intimate look at live owls in their natural environment with an experienced guide. This one of a kind adventure!
Last Chance Forever, the Bird of Prey Conservancy, a featured performer since the beginning of the festival, and the Muleshoe Farm and Ranch Trust, have adopted the event in its ninth year. The cost of the event and all donations benefit continuing preservation and operation of the Muleshoe ranch reserve and Last Chance Forever's work rehabilitating injured, sick, and orphaned birds of prey.
The event is $10 for adults, free for children, but free passes are available from the event's website, harvestmooncelebration.com.
