Gem of the Hills hosts blood drive
Gem of the Hills Event Center is set up for a blood drive that was held Feb. 24. “This blood drive showed, yet again, what caring and generous people live in our community. Not only did residents look after their friends and neighbors during and following the winter storm, but they came out in full measure just days later to help save the lives of people they will never know.” stated Connie Barron, president of the Gem of the Hills board of directors. Working in partnership with South Texas Blood and Tissue Center in San Antonio, Gem of the Hills volunteers rallied to prepare the space so it could meet strict COVID-19 protocols so that more than 40 Blanco area residents could safely donate a life saving gift. Their generosity helped make up a critical 3,000-donation deficit. Unprecedented weather conditions left the South Texas Area in a blood shortage emergency meaning there is not enough blood on hand to treat trauma cases and patients who require blood. Donors can call 210-731-5590 to get more information about giving blood. For more information on your community center and to help with programs and events such as this critical blood drive go to gemofthehills.org.
