Mike Smith is a new face on Blanco’s City Council, but he’s ready to help prepare the city for the future.
The new council member, who was elected to the position this spring, lived in Longview for over 65 years and served on multiple boards and commissions during 20 of those years. He co-founded and served as president of a commercial/industrial construction company, Transet Co., for over 30 years. According to the website the company “is a Longview-based contracting firm offering general contracting, construction management, and design/build services.” S.E. Belcher Jr. Chapel & Performance Center is an example of one of projects handled by Transet Co.; this is a 74,000 square foot, $20 million state of the art performance facility & chapel at LeTourneau University completed in 2007.
During his time at Transet Co., the councilman maintained good relationships with his co-workers and customers. Smith considers his greatest professional strengths: extensive knowledge in business, construction and real estate.
“I understand the commitment it takes to operate a business and to serve an organization. I am willing to do my utmost to do what is in the best interest of the city by serving on the city council,” explained Smith.
Not being tolerant to indecision or procrastination are his weaknesses. He likes being involved with the plans and helping the city by working with the city staff and other council members to prepare for the future.
“When I decided to apply for a position on the council, I had not heard of COVID-19. We will have issues and with growth we will have even more challenges both fiscal and infrastructural,” said Smith. He is dedicated to protecting the core values and preparing for the future.
The family bought their home on River Road in July 2018, but stayed in the garage apartment while remodeling until the house was ready in March 2019. Smith and his wife moved to Blanco to be closer to their daughter and her family.
The councilman described Blanco as “a serendipity in the Texas Hill Country.” He is happy to be able to spend time with his grandchildren more frequently; they enjoy the river together.
Smith and his family have always enjoyed participating in church activities and are looking forward to making new memories at Blanco United Methodist Church. He also enjoys spending time outdoors, participating in sanctioned race events, and open road racing.
