A small spillage incident from drilling on the Permian Highway Pipeline in Gillespie County on Saturday did not result in any water pollution, according to the Texas Railroad Commission.
“The RRC has rules in place to ensure the protection of public safety and the environment. Kinder Morgan notified us of inadvertent returns that occurred this weekend. Preliminary RRC inspection results indicate no pollution of surface or sub-surface waters,” the Railroad Commission said in a statement.
The incident resulted in about 90 gallons of drilling fluid being released, according to a statement from Kinder Morgan.
“An inadvertent return is not a drilling accident or spill,” said a statement from Kinder Morgan. “Instead, it refers to the ponding of drilling fluids on the ground surface at a location between the HDD (horizontal directional drill) entry or exit location along and HDD alignment. They are common in the construction of all HDD operations, particularly at the start and end of a drill near the ground surface. As such, an inadvertent return plan was already prepared. The crew members were in place to respond quickly and implemented the plan.”
The impacted areas were cleaned up that day.
