UIL issues revised calendar, COVID-19 guidelines

The University Interscholastic League on Tuesday morning issued a revised calendar and guidelines for dealing with COVID-19.

The revised calendar allows schools in classes 1A-4A to begin football and volleyball practices on Aug. 3. Competitions for volleyball may begin Aug. 10, with team tennis and cross country competitions allowed starting Aug. 17. The first date football games are allowed is Aug. 27.

Marching band may begin show curriculum Sept. 7. Region contest deadline for Class 3A schools, including Blanco, will be Dec. 10, with an area contest deadline of Dec. 12.

Schools in classes 5A-6A may start football and volleyball practices Sept. 7. Volleyball begins competition Sept. 14, while football games may start Sept. 24. Team tennis and cross country competitions are allowed to begin competition Sept. 7.

The UIL will require face coverings for all activities as long as an order is in place. This covers everyone in attendance age 10 an older.

If the school district has not screened staff members for COVID-19, they must self-screen, including taking their own temperature. Parents are not to allow a student to participate in UIL activities if they have COVID-19 symptoms, the UIL stated.

Before visitors or fans are allowed in areas “where UIL activities are being conducted,” the school district must screen them. Those who have been confirmed positive for the virus, those with symptoms and those who have been in close contact with an individual who has the virus must remain off campus and away from areas where UIL activities are being conducted for a period of 14 days.

Schools will be allowed to deny any individual admittance who has failed the screening. Those who have had the virus, have been exposed to it or have had symptoms may be readmitted after following a variety of guidelines, which are available on www.uiltexas.org.

Schools must make hand sanitizer and other disinfectants available in locker rooms, band halls and performance arenas. Seating and areas where people congregate should be regularly cleaned and disinfected. Equipment stored in lockers should be disinfected daily.

Schools must make sure staff and students wear face coverings in locker rooms, training rooms and other areas where students may congregate.

Schools should also screen volunteers, officials and others prior to each game.
