Radioactive camera found

A camera which contained radioactive material and went missing late last week has been found, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

The department reported Monday morning that the camera, which was lost Friday after the truck it was in was swept away in floodwaters of the Pedernales River, was found intact east of North River Road near Stonewall. The equipment was sealed and contained its protective steel overpack box, the agency said, and there was no release of radiation.

The Gillespie County Sheriff’s Office notified the public of the incident Saturday, and stated that the risk of exposure to the radiation was very low. The camera, which is owned by Shawcor, went missing when a truck with a slide-in camper was swept away into flood waters southeast of Fredericksburg. The camper was found 10 miles downstream, but the camera was not found inside.

The Texas Department of State Health Services, which licenses radioactive materials and equipment, is investigating the incident to determine whether there were violations of state laws or rules and will take appropriate enforcement action.
