Nell Stansbury
Nell Stansbury

Nell Stansbury, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed from this life on March 31, 2020, one month shy of her 95th birthday.

Born April 29, 1925, in Brownwood, to H.P. and Hallie Stewart, Nell graduated from Scranton High School in 1942. Reflective of her generation, she was ever intrepid and strong willed, embarking straight away on a life of work, support and service.

She began her adult working life during the World War II years in San Antonio and later settled in Blanco, where she first shared farm and ranch duties with husband Bill, added a job in town at the Blanco Bank, and set about rearing two daughters, Joy and Gail.

Nell had a long and venerable career at the Blanco National Bank. Beginning in 1953 as secretary to the bank president, she rose to and held the position of Executive Vice President until her retirement in 1990. There she also managed the bank’s insurance arm, Brigham Insurance Agency.

While committed to her day job, Nell was no less dedicated to property and wildlife management. She marveled at nature’s beauty (blooms and birds) and banes (‘dillos and deer). She grew a bounty of vegetables, fruits and pecans; kept a greenhouse full of beautiful tropicals; had fields of wildflowers; and tirelessly maintained her spacious lawn (in true lawn ranger fashion). And from it all, she derived much satisfaction and pride, and was always quick and keen to share her bounty and knowledge.

As with many of her generation, Nell’s youth and early adulthood were impacted by the economic hardships of the Great Depression followed by the scarcities of the war effort. Those combined and prolonged experiences were integral to establishing her core values and character. They also provided insight and recognition when others were in need, and she acted with compassion and quiet, often anonymous, generosity throughout her life.

Nell wholly believed in the power and grace of God and always expressed gratefulness for all blessings. She drew sustenance from her faith, guidance and encouragement in scripture, and confidence and comfort through prayer.

She leaves daughters Joy (Jimmie Cloud) of San Antonio and Gail (Ray Henry) of Austin, four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren; and was predeceased by her husband, parents, and brothers Blynn and Hezle. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Blanco Good Samaritan Center or a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be planned for a later date.
