On Thursday, May 6th high school art students are invited to Lakeside Pavilion to participate in the annual Paint the Town festival. The budding artists will be provided an art demonstration and then are paired with competition artists to paint plein air together. Launched in 2016, Student Art Day facilitates a space for local high school students to participate in the annual Paint the Town festival, familiarizing them with the French impressionist style of painting.
Highland Lakes Creative Arts holds a strong mission to support the arts in the local area, particularly among students in public schools where resources are limited and often subjected to relentless budget cuts. The importance of art is at the precipice of everything HLCA pioneers.
Over the past 5 years, Student Art Day quickly became a highlight for the local community as students anticipate the opportunity to not only meet nationally recognized artists but learn directly from their instruction.
“We are not necessarily trying to create more professional artists but rather to assist in developing more complete humans. Many people don’t know that children who have art education in their school curriculum tend to be more empathetic, have fewer discipline problems and typically perform at a higher level in math and science! It is my belief that art education helped me develop a creative brain that has benefited me professionally throughout my adult life.” said Erin Hinzmann, co-chair for Paint the Town.
HLCA focuses on this outreach to local students as a treasured way to encourage aspiring artists, while also providing a necessary creative outlet to young minds.
“We look forward to following the artistic pursuits of our local community, particularly the younger generation,” Hinzmann said. “They always bring a fresh perspective, and it truly fuels the reason we work so hard to bring Paint the Town to the Highland Lakes area.”
Paint the Town runs from May 2 through May 8 throughout the Highland Lakes area. Student Art Day is on May 6, 2021 and students are encouraged to paint the community as they see it. Additionally, local student artists may participate in the Quick Draw on Saturday the 8th, free of charge.
