Scramble Ramblings - 10/14/2015
Tue, October 27, 2015 2:36 PM

We had 15 golfers show up for the 10/14 Scramble, and they were formed up into four teams. We teed off promptly at 5:00pm, and by 7:00pm the teams began returning to the club house to post their scores. It appears that the skill balance between the teams was pretty closely matched, since 3 of the 4 teams carded a score of 4 under par. The teams that tied were: Larry Smith, Tom, Ron, and Chuck; Brad Lehmberg, Richard, Patsy and Matt; and Marshall Frazier, Daniel, Will and Mike. The teams that tied went directly to yet another putt-off, and after everyone gave it their best shot, Brad's team got the ball the closest to the hole, just barely beating out Larry's team effort. Congratulations to the the first and second place winners!

It was decided by the players that we would have 2 more Scrambles this year: 10/21 and 10/28. Come on out and join us for these last 2 fun events. We'll then all be able to work on our games over the winter months and be totally ready to start up the Scrambles again in the spring.

Have you ever shanked the golf ball? It's not a nice experience, but even the best golfers will do it every once in a while. Shanks occur when the club head gets farther away from you at impact than it was when you addressed the ball. As a result, the ball is struck on the hosel and flies off sideways. In an article in the current issue of Golf Magazine, Hank Haney suggests the following to "Shank-Proof Your Swing:" Start by making sure you are lined up the right distance from the ball. Your arms should be hanging straight down from your shoulders, so you shouldn't be "reaching" for the ball. During the swing, you must keep your body in the same posture as it was when you addressed the ball. Don't straighten up at the waist or flex your knees; don't go bobbing and weaving; stay as still as possible. As a drill, Haney suggests that you pick your favorite iron, set a ball down, and then place a head cover just outside the toe of your golf ball. Practice this until you don't hit the cover as you swing through and strike the ball.

I've decided to write a book entitled: The Right Grip, Stance, and Mental Attitude for the 3rd Putt. If any of you have ever 3-putted a green before, please share your experiences with me.
